Say Cheese!

Did you know that before the 1940s, most people didn't smile in photographs? In the 19th century, a more serious or neutral expression was often considered more dignified and attractive. As you may guess, dental hygiene was not a priority or as accessible, so chances are many people did not want to show off missing, broken, or crooked teeth. Additionally, many early cameras took several hours to capture a photograph, which is a long time to hold a smile. Because photographs were so expensive, most people only sat for one or two photos in their lifetime.
